Linda L. Kelley served as President of the Board of County Commissioners from December 1998 through December 2000, and the Vice President from Dec 2000 through 2004. She represents the Second Election District, at Large, in Calvert County.
Mrs. Kelley is a former Federal government employee of 29 years. The U.S. Navy employed her for 12 years, working in both the personnel and supply management areas. She also worked for the Government Printing Office as a senior staff aide to the Superintendent of Documents, and as the Assistant Manager of the GPO warehousing/distribution facility in Laurel. Transferring to the Department of Agriculture, Mrs. Kelley spearheaded the use of bar coding in property management applications. She retired from the Department of the Interior, Office of the Secretary, where she served as the Department's Property Management Officer for eight years. She was employed as a property management consultant at the Holocaust Memorial Museum for two years following her retirement from the Federal government.
Mrs. Kelley was elected to her first term in 1994, was reelected to serve a second term in November 1998, and reelected once again to serve a third term in November 2002. She has run on a platform of controlled residential growth, agricultural preservation, fiscal responsibility, and maintaining the quality of life in Calvert County.
Commissioner Kelley comes to this position with a strong background in civic involvement, including serving as the President of the Dunkirk Area Concerned Citizens Association for six years, and as a member of the Calvert Citizens Coalition.
Prior to election, Mrs. Kelley was appointed to and served for eight years as a member of the Commissioner's Citizens Advisory Committee. She also served as a member of the Ethics Commission, Calvert County Commission for Women and several affordable housing task force groups. Additionally, she was a founding member and served as Chairman of the Safe Harbor Board of Directors, a non-profit organization, which spearheaded the opening and operation of Safe Harbor, Calvert County's abused person's shelter. She continues as a Board member of that organization. Mrs. Kelley was also the Co-Chairman of the Maryland Chapter of Grandparents United for Children's Rights, an advocacy group which addressed legislative issues relative to grandchild/grandparent relationships. A strong advocate for the humane treatment of animals, she also serves on the board of the Friends of Felines.
Mrs. Kelley was instrumental in the establishment of the Calvert Country Market and Watermen's Wharf. A strong advocate for youth programs, Mrs. Kelley has provided support to Project Graduation, the high school NJROTC units, and the numerous Scouting programs in the County, attending virtually all of the numerous BSA Eagle Scout and Girl Scout Gold Award programs in the last ten years.
Mrs. Kelley is the Commissioner representative to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, the Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse, the Calvert Country Market Board, the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission, Jefferson Patterson Park, and the Tri-County Animal Shelter.
Mrs. Kelley and her husband, Tom, have two daughters and four grandchildren. The couple resides in Owings, Maryland.
